WHO IS GEMMA?

Wishes are just dreams that you've yet to realise!

Born in Birmingham, United Kingdom, Gemma was brought up in a creative environment, which developed into writing and painting. During secondary school she found her ‘writing voice’ by writing short stories, using her friends as the main characters. Tragically, it was also during this time, that one of her stories got found and read by a teacher who gave her such negative feedback that she never thought she would ever write again.

Years later, after marrying her current husband, whom she knew from secondary school, and had made new friends at work, that she began writing again. Actually, it was down to another creative mind, Sammi, who plagued her with fan-fictions and anime that got her inspired to write once more. Blood and Rain was the result of that inspiration.

Since then, Gemma has constantly tried to develop her writing style and knowledge, taking on self-publishing courses, as well as editing and proofreading courses. Gemma is still being hounded by her friends to write more, which is what she is trying to do. She has several more in the pipeline and hopes to never stop – even with her munchkins nipping at her heels. Yep, Gemma is now a mother, which won't let that stop her. Gemma is using it to push her forward.

But don't think that her talents lie in just writing, oh no! Gemma is also a book cover designer, an editor and proofreader, a sculptor and an artist. She is starting a BA (Hons) in Ceramics and Glass as of 2019 to expand on her artistic talents.

Gemma on Writing....

Well, being a self-published author and only really starting in the last few years, it's hard for me to comment. All I can say is, write, write and write some more. If you stop, start up again. Being a writer is about more than just money and fame, it's about heart and the need to express yourself using the written word, whether anyone reads it, enjoys it or it gathers dust in the darkest corner of your home. You have a need to write, to create something important to yourself, so don't ever think you're not good enough or worry that people won't enjoy it, it's all about you. Did you want to write it? Were you happy you finally got it down on paper? Did you feel complete, somehow? Well then, what does anything else matter?

As for self-publishing and traditional publishing, I see that as a decision for your to make. Ask around, seek help from other writers and go to events. Get as much information as you can, then decide on what course you want your feet to travel. I will give one warning - publishers/agents will not ask for money up front, if they do they are 'vanity' publishers and I would suggest staying away from them. They may look fancy and promise so many things, but honestly, I've not heard good things about them or their so-called promises.

Anyway ... I think I've said enough. Go find your inspiration, enjoy life and create.
